Instrumentation

Contrabass clarinet introduced : marked as D.B.CL.

new instruments introduced: accordian,vibraphone,contrabass clarinet

brass only comes in at the ends as a fanfare,

the acconrdian plays the fairground umcha-cha

4/4 but in bar 20 and 31 theres a 3/4(waltz) : significnt,change of feel in spite of the obviouse metre change it doesnt have the same chaos as the others,its much more smoother.It stays at 120 throughout,no tempo changes

begins monophonically with a pizzicato cello

it becomes melody dominaed homophony,from 8 to 17 theres these wide octaves,theres immitation in bars 2-3

the end of bar 4 tha bass clarinet and the cellos have this uneven rythm(ties over barline)

8 to 10 theres the penguin B motif

bar 17 to 18 the penguin B uses octave motif

in bar 20 the first beat of every bar is the pneuing a extended melody

in bar 26-27 in the cor anglais and cellos wwith minims play the penguing motif A

in bar 29 the harp plays diminution of the extended meloded of motif A

from 20-29 three different ways the melody motif of penguin is treated

in bar 44 semiquaver fluroish,ascending run it imitates whats going on the screen(trying to snatch a fish)

tonality

Eb major but its C minor due to the c minor triad in bar 1

ends on a C Major “tierce de picardie”

its pretty much C minor throughout, its consitency(which is juxtapositions the other cues with minor/major ambuguity depictign shadows)

harmony

lots of cluster chords,lot of disonance

the dissonance in the beggining then the cluster chords,then the oompa ompaa there is direct contrast

bar 49, appoggiatura(a suspension)

bar 52 there is very typical cluster chord with csrensced(typical of elfman) which creates dissonance

whole tone harmonics in bar 50

51 theres an augmented chord
